Knitting the Future

Posted on July 20, 2016 by Megan Hawke

Pebble and USAID’s CREL Project are creating new employment for Bangladesh communities who were dependent on the forest for their livelihoods. With these projects, they are more self-dependent and free from the risks of working in the jungle. These communities have an opportunity to lead a sustainable livelihood and help to conserve the Sundarbans.

Have a look at the video for an insight of this amazing project we are so proud to be a part of:

We celebrate World Fair Trade Day with other fair traders around the world forming human chains.

Yes, human chains across five continents and over 70 countries. People behind the Fair Trade chain will take a break, go out and celebrate on 14 May 2016.

The human chain formation is our way of showing solidarity with people, groups and institutions that are making positive change and continue to make a difference in the lives of others, community and the planet. They are our Agents for Change, and we celebrate with them!

Use the Poster Generatorpost your photo and you can join fair traders virtually in a human chain around world! Fair Trade Guaranteed

Posted on March 24, 2016 by Megan Hawke

We are so delighted to have been awarded WFTO Guaranteed Fair Trade status at Hathay Bunano.  There are only 20 WFTO guaranteed members in the whole of Asia and so we are very proud, happy and humble to be one of those.

WFTO introduced the Guarantee system in 2014 as a revolutionary new system to ensure fair trade throughout the supply chain in a way that is credible, clear and affordable.   Only organisations which have been audited for the Guaranteed system are allowed to use the WFTO Guaranteed Fair Trade logo on their products.    You can read in depth about the system and the components it requires on the WFTO website.

Fair Trade makes a very real difference to the lives of those who are working in these supply chains.    We cover the stories of artisans working with Hathay Bunano and making your Pebble toys regularly on this blog and are always delighted by all your responses to them.  When you buy products you can choose to make the world a fairer place and the huge global consumer market shows just how much power consumers have.   As a consumer you make the world a better place by buying fair trade and we are delighted to partner with you in this process.

Thank you so much to all our wonderful customers for continuing to support Hathay Bunano and Pebble, to all the wonderful people at WFTO who have helped us along this journey, to the wonderful artisans of Hathay Bunano, to the distributors and retailers of Pebble toys, and to all our colleagues in the fair trade space – we could not have done this without you.

Fair Trade Breaks Poverty

Posted on October 09, 2015 by Megan Hawke

Fair traders around the world, together with small producers and backed by consumers, are breaking the chains of poverty. Fair Trade is growing and that is our proof that we are gaining our fight against extreme poverty.

The WFTO membership count doubled from 155 Fair Trade organisations in 2005 to 355 in 2014. In the same period, the turnovers of these members quadrupled from 136 million euros to 448 million euros. To ensure their way out of poverty, producer-beneficiaries of WFTO members receive fair prices for their products, long-term income security, capacity-building and life-skills trainings, no discrimination, no slavery, and good working condition.

“It is unacceptable that there are still over 1 billion people living in extreme poverty and deep deprivation. That is why at WFTO we fight poverty together with the small producers through sustainable solutions. The 10 Fair Trade Principles are our weapon. It is important that the eradication of poverty is done together with those affected. And with the support of consumers and businesses Fair Trade can go even further in its contribution to poverty eradication.” – Rudi Dalvai, WFTO President

WFTO believes that poverty can be effectively eradicated by empowering small producers, giving them fair and sustainable means of livelihoods. Hathay Bunano Proshikan Society (HBPS) is a social business enterprise, a non profit organization registered in Bangladesh since January 2005 creating employment opportunities throughout rural disadvantage groups, in particular women with young children who traditionally find it very difficult to find employment. Hathay Bunano P.S is a member of World Fair Trade Organization (WFTO). Our aim is to create sustainable employment through training and the subsequent production of handicraft type items sold in mainstream markets in 37 counties.

Join the movement this Anti-Poverty week from the 11th-17th October- Let's break the chains of poverty together.
